Our Online Slots: How They Work

Our lobby has over 3,600 games. Here is a plain guide to what happens behind each spin and how to play with a clear budget.

What decides each spin

Every slot in our lobby, from providers such as Pragmatic Play, Play'n GO, NetEnt, Hacksaw Gaming and Nolimit City, runs on a random number generator, or RNG. This is software that produces numbers constantly, even when nobody is playing. When you press spin, the game takes the current result and maps it to symbols on the reels.

The animation you see is only a display of a result already chosen. Stopping the reels early, changing the speed or spinning at a certain moment does not change the outcome.

Each spin is independent. The game has no memory of earlier spins, so a long losing run does not make a win more likely. A big win does not make the next spin colder either. Any idea that a machine is "due" comes from how people read patterns, not from how the software works.

RTP and volatility

RTP stands for return to player. It is a percentage showing how much of all money wagered a game is designed to pay back over a very large number of spins. The rest is the house edge.

RTP is a long-run average across millions of spins and many players. It says almost nothing about one session. You can lose your whole budget on a game with a high RTP, or win on one with a lower figure.

Volatility describes how wins are spread out:

VolatilityTypical patternWhat it means for you
LowFrequent small winsBudget tends to last longer, big wins are rare
MediumA mix of small and larger winsModerate swings
HighLong dry spells, occasional large winsBudget can run out quickly

Paylines, ways and features

A payline is a set path across the reels. You win when matching symbols land along an active line, usually starting from the left. Some games use "ways to win" instead, where matching symbols on adjacent reels count in any row position.

Common features include:

  • Free spins rounds: triggered by special symbols, played at no extra cost per spin.
  • Multipliers: increase the value of a win by a set factor.
  • Buy feature: lets you pay a fixed amount to enter the bonus round directly. This cost is often many times your normal stake, so it drains a budget fast. Bonus buy is not available while you have an active bonus.

Progressive jackpots grow as a small part of each bet on a game or network is added to a prize pool. The pool keeps rising until someone wins it. Some of our progressive games have jackpots above $800,000. The chance of hitting it on any spin is very small. Slots count 100% toward bonus wagering, except excluded titles and progressive jackpot slots, which count 0%.

Demo mode and the info screen

Many of our games offer a demo mode with play credits. It is a good way to learn the rules and feel the volatility without spending money. Demo results are not a guide to future real money results.

Before playing any game, open its info or paytable screen and check:

  1. The stated RTP and whether more than one version exists.
  2. Minimum and maximum bet per spin. Our bets range from $0.10 to $1,000.
  3. Number of paylines or ways, and how wins are counted.
  4. What each symbol pays and how features are triggered.
  5. Any maximum win cap and the cost of a buy feature.

Budgeting a session

Decide how much you can afford to lose before you start, then split it. For example, a $100 monthly entertainment budget could become four sessions of $25. At $0.50 per spin, $25 covers about 50 spins if nothing is won back.

Treat that $25 as spent the moment you sit down. If it runs out, the session ends. If you win, consider setting part aside rather than putting it all back in. Use our reality check reminders and deposit limits.

Signs it is time to stop

  • You are chasing losses or raising bets to win money back.
  • You play longer or spend more than planned.
  • You borrow money or use funds meant for bills.
  • You feel anxious, irritated or secretive about playing.

FAQ

Can a slot be 'due' to pay out?

No. Each spin is decided by a random number generator and is independent of every spin before it. A long losing streak does not make a win more likely on the next spin.

What does RTP mean for a single session?

Very little. RTP is a long-run average measured over a huge number of spins. In one session your results can be far above or far below that figure, and losing your full budget is always possible.

What is volatility in slots?

Volatility describes how wins are distributed. Low volatility games pay small amounts more often, while high volatility games pay less often but can pay larger amounts. Higher volatility means bigger swings in your balance.
